Please read the following information regarding CE requirements:

Certificates of attendance are suitable for use to meet professional development requirements for educators and clinicians. Attendees can earn up to 20 contact hours of credit by attending the five-day institute. See details on the number of hours and types of credit below.

In order to receive any professional development credits, you must fill out the evaluation/learning outcomes questionnaire and leave the form with institute staff. Certificates will be emailed to you 2-3 weeks after the institute.

You can also receive additional credits by writing a paper on how you applied what you learned. For more details and questions, contact the CE Director, Kristin Dunay at (781) 449-4010 ext. 104.

A Teacher's Guide to the Learning Brain: Translating Psychology and Neuroscience Research for the Classroom

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

SLP participants will be able to:

  • Develop insights and strategies to anticipate, identify, and mitigate working memory overload
  • Describe the crucial role of working memory in all classroom learning
  • Apply current research on attention to enhance student focus and boost classroom energy
  • Demonstrate positive mindset strategies to promote learning goals and gritty resilience
  • Show methods to enhance long-term memory formation —that is, learning—by delving into research on encoding, consolidation, and retrieval
  • Describe ways to enrich classroom practice by converting stresses to challenges and fostering a positive emotional climate
  • Analyze psychology and neuroscience research articles, with a particular focus on developing effective and informed skepticism

Andrew Watson, EdM, MA, began his classroom life as a high-school English teacher in 1988, and has been working in or near schools ever since. In 2011, he earned his MEd from the Mind, Brain and Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education. As President of “Translate the Brain,” Andrew Watson now works with teachers, students, administrators, and parents to make learning easier and teaching more effective. He has presented at schools and workshops across the country and serves as an adviser to several organizations, including “The People’s Science” and “The Brain Education Project.” Andrew is the Editor of the Learning & the Brain Blog and author of  Learning Begins: The Science of Working Memory and Attention for the Classroom Teacher (2017) and Learning Grows (Forthcoming 2019)

Credits for Psychologists and School Psychologists: Public Information Resources, Inc. (PIRI) is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. PIRI maintains responsibility for the program. Psychologists and school psychologists must complete the evaluation form in their program book in order to receive credits. This program will provide 20 hours of CEs.

Credits for Educators: State Department of Education:

PIRI is able to provide credits that qualify for the education departments in most states and are accepted by most districts. You may wish to check whether your state's Department of Education requires a special approved provider status. PIRI is a specifically approved provider in the Departments of Education in the states of CT, TX, GA, and NY.

Credits for School Social Workers: Public Information Resources, Inc., has applied for up to 20 Category I credits to social workers through the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) collaborative through both the Boston College and the Simmons College Schools of Social Work.
