This presentation explores how children learn mathematics in the elementary grades—and why many encounter difficulties along the way. Drawing on key insights from the science of learning, it will highlight practical, research-based strategies for designing effective interventions that support all learners. Special emphasis will be placed on foundational concepts including number sense, computational fluency, and a deeper understanding of fractions.

Nancy C. Jordan, PhD

Dr. Nancy C. Jordan is the Dean Family Endowed Chair and Professor of Education at the University of Delaware. Her research centers on how children learn mathematics and why many struggle, particularly in early and middle childhood. Professor Jordan has received extensive grant support from organizations such as the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES).  She served as Principal Investigator for the influential Center for Improving Learning of Fractions, funded by IES.  A prolific scholar, she has authored numerous highly cited articles, with recent work appearing in the Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Developmental Psychology, and the Journal of Research on Mathematics Education, among others. Professor Jordan is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Education and a Fellow of both the American Educational Research Association and the Association for Psychological Science. In 2020, she received the Kauffman-Hallahan-Pullin Distinguished Researcher Award from the Council for Exceptional Children, recognizing her contributions to the study of mathematics learning difficulties and disabilities.learning difficulties and disabilities.
