Executive functioning challenges often underlie difficulties in attention, behavior, emotional regulation, and learning. In this transformative session, Dr. Varleisha Lyons (formerly Gibbs) bridges neuroscience, trauma-responsive care, and occupational therapy to provide practical, brain-based tools for supporting children and youth with executive functioning needs.

Participants will explore how early adversity, sensory processing differences, and neurodevelopmental delays impact a child’s ability to plan, focus, regulate emotions, and complete tasks. Grounded in cutting-edge research and years of clinical experience, Dr. Lyons offers strategies that strengthen the core pillars of executive function—working memory, cognitive flexibility, and self-regulation—through everyday routines and therapeutic practices.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:
Define executive functioning and its connection to brain development and trauma.
Recognize how dysregulation, sensory processing, and stress impair executive function.
Apply brain-aligned strategies to support working memory, impulse control, and task initiation.
Design regulation-based interventions to promote learning, focus, and independence.
Integrate neuro-affirming, culturally responsive techniques into therapy, home, or classroom settings.
