This webinar will run from 5:00 pm - 6:35 pm EDT / 2:00 pm - 3:35 pm PDT on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11, 2020 for a total of 3 credit hours.

Over the past decade we have seen a decrease in the amount of time children and teens spent reading. The summer reading slide is real even during a more typical school year. It is especially difficult now with a remote learning environment and many teachers and parents worry that students will go months without picking up a book. So what can we do to get kids more engaged in reading, even during the summer and online environments? The key to developing truly independent readers who read for pleasure, for interest, and for connections has to do with the amount of ownership they feel over their reading lives.

Drawing upon research from psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience, Dr. Gravity Goldberg will provide key strategies and moves that support student independence, whether at home, in school, or online. Learn how you, as teachers and parents, can help foster the mindsets that students need to become truly engaged as readers.
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will learn about:

  • Key components to independent readers' mindsets
  • The kinds of choices students need to stay engaged in reading
  • Practices to let go of because they get in the way of the motivation to read
  • Teaching strategies and feedback you can use to support students as readers (at home, in school, and online)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This virtual learning experience is applicable for PreK-12 teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, counselors, and other educators who support reading instruction.
