1:00 PM - 5:30 PM:

  • A discussion of what participants hope to gain from the course
  • A description of some challenging situations participants and the course leaders have faced and/or continue to face
  • A review of the history of the concept of "mindsets" in the field of education and psychology
  • The definition of mindsets that will be used in this course

5:30 PM: Welcome reception and dinner


Wednesday, June 26


8:00 - 8:30 AM: Continental breakfast

8:30 AM-Noon:

  • A discussion of the questions guiding this course
  • A description of the characteristics of the mindset of engaged, motivated students
  • A description of the mindset of resilient students

Noon -12:45 PM: Lunch

12:45-3:30 PM:

  • To distinguish intrinsic or autonomous motivation from extrinsic or controlled motivation
  • A consideration of two frameworks for understanding motivation: Deci's focus on basic needs and attribution theory; implications of these two frameworks for educational practice.

3:30 - 6:00 PM: Free time

6:00 - 7:30 PM: Offsite dinner with group


Thursday, June 27


8:00 - 8:30 AM: Continental breakfast

8:30 AM - Noon:

  • A description of the features of the concept of "student engagement"
  • A consideration of the commonalities among intrinsic motivation, student engagement and resilience and their relationship with a positive school climate

Noon - 12:45 PM: Lunch


12:45-3:30 PM:

  • An outline of the mindset of educators who are effective in nurturing motivation, engagement and resilience in students
  • Exercises to nurture a positive mindset in educators together with a description of educational practices (including case material) that are rooted in this mindset and help to create a positive, supportive school climate

After 3:30 PM: Free time and dinner on your own


Friday, June 28


8:00 - 8:30 AM: Continental breakfast

8:30 - 11:45 AM:

  • A continuation of exercises to nurture a positive mindset in educators together a description of educational practices (including case material) that are rooted in this mindset and help to create a positive, supportive school climate
  • A description of a framework and techniques for increasing "stress hardiness" and lessening burnout in educators
  • Small group discussion of action plans that participants intend to implement in their schools to promote a positive school climate and reinforce intrinsic motivation, student engagement and resilience in students

11:45 AM - 12:30 PM: Lunch


12:30 - 2:00PM:

  • A sharing with the entire group of action plans developed by each smaller group so that all participants can benefit from each other's insights and input
  • Final comments and feedback
