{"id":6992,"date":"2023-03-01T05:29:57","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T10:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/blog\/?p=6992"},"modified":"2023-03-01T05:29:57","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T10:29:57","slug":"practical-advice-for-students-how-to-make-good-flashcards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/practical-advice-for-students-how-to-make-good-flashcards\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Advice for Students: How to Make Good Flashcards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Flashcards feel to me like a research sweet-spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the first place: for the most part, students believe that they help &#8212; and are even willing to make them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the second place: flashcards should help. After all, flashcards promote <strong>retrieval practice<\/strong>. And as you know, research shows that retrieval practice really helps students learn.<\/p>\n<p>So, if we can find specific research about flashcards, it should be especially useful in our work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AdobeStock_294666350.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7000 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AdobeStock_294666350-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"portrait of father teaching daughter how to read by using simple words and letters on a flash card at home\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AdobeStock_294666350-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AdobeStock_294666350-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AdobeStock_294666350-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It would be even better if one of the researchers were Mark McDaniel &#8212; who co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/make-it-stick-the-science-of-successful-learning-by-peter-c-brown-henry-l-roediger-iii-and-mark-a-mcdaniel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>make it stick<\/em><\/a>: one of the great books on memory research for teachers.<\/p>\n<p>If you agree with me on these points, I&#8217;ve got some good news for you today!<\/p>\n<h2>Starting with Questions<\/h2>\n<p>Far and away the <em>most common flashcard question<\/em> I hear is: &#8220;does it matter if students make the flashcards themselves?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The logic behind this question makes sense. When students\u00a0<em>think about<\/em> the material in order to make good flashcards, then that thought might promote learning.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: flashcard making isn&#8217;t just the bad kind of &#8220;active learning&#8221; (students are BUSY!) but the good kind of &#8220;active learning&#8221; (students are THINKING!).<\/p>\n<p>I have two doubts about this thought process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">First: <em>students might not know enough<\/em> <em>to make <strong>good<\/strong> flashcards<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If their cards prompt them to recall relatively unimportant ideas and processes, then the subsequent retrieval practice won&#8217;t really help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Second:\u00a0<em>making flashcards takes time<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If students have access to good flashcards &#8212; ones that highlight the core concepts, procedures, and facts &#8212; then studying with those cards will (perhaps) be more efficient than taking time to make their own.<\/p>\n<p>Two other questions also suggest themselves:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What <em>kind of questions<\/em> should be on the flashcards?<\/p>\n<p>Most students make detail flashcards. That is: flashcards that focus on facts, definitions, dates, and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>They might also &#8212; or instead &#8212; make &#8220;conceptual&#8221; flashcards. That is: flashcards that combine details in compare\/contrast patterns, or process steps.*<\/p>\n<p>Question #3:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do flashcards <em>help some students more than others<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>The good news: a recent study explores all those questions.<\/p>\n<h2>The First Question<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2211368118300299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers<\/a> started with a straightforward experiment. They had students read textbook passages \u2013 one about biological anthropology, the other about geology \u2013 and then study for a quiz.<\/p>\n<p>The students were divided into four groups, based on how they studied:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group A studied however they chose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group B received 12 flashcards prepared by the textbook makers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group C made their own 12 flashcards. They didn\u2019t get any instructions about them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group D made their own 12 flashcards. They did get special instructions: \u201cinclude 4 \u2018conceptual\u2019 questions\u201d \u2013 that is, questions that compare\/contrast, or that highlight several steps in a process.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s return to the first question I asked above: did the students who <em>made their own flashcards<\/em> learn more than those who <em>studied with pre-made flashcards<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><em>Nope.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is: students in Groups C &amp; D (who made their own cards) did NOT learn more than those in Group B (who received pre-made flashcards).<\/p>\n<p>Even worse: they DID spend more time.<\/p>\n<p>So, at least in this experiment, asking students to make their own flashcards just isn\u2019t very efficient. They DO spend more time, but DON\u2019T learn more. A bad combination.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, but what about the <em>second<\/em> question I asked above?<\/p>\n<p>Did the students who made \u201cconceptual\u201d flashcards learn more than those who got no special instructions?<\/p>\n<p>Again, <em>Nope.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students in Group C &#8212; who got no special instructions &#8212; mostly made \u201cdetail\u201d flashcards. Students in Group D &#8212; who were instructed to make 4 \u201cconceptual\u201d flashcards \u2013 basically followed those instructions; they made 4 \u201cconceptual\u201d and 8 detail flashcards.<\/p>\n<p>But: both groups spent the same amount of time, and got the same score on the quiz.<\/p>\n<h2>Digging Deeper<\/h2>\n<p>This research team had hypothesized that the &#8220;conceptual&#8221; flashcards would benefit learning, and were therefore surprised by the results of this first experiment.<\/p>\n<p>However, they quickly saw a plausible explanation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C-Group students \u2013 who got no instructions \u2013 made 12 flashcards. On average, 10 of them were detail flashcards, and the other 2 were \u201cconceptual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D-Group students \u2013 instructed to make 4 conceptual flashcards \u2013 did so: 8 detail cards and 4 \u201cconcept\u201d cards.<\/p>\n<p>So you can see, not much of a difference there.<\/p>\n<p>In their next experiment, these researchers doubled down on these two different strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Two new groups of students read the same two passages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group E received <em>detail-only<\/em> flashcards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Group F received <em>\u201cconceptual\u201d-only<\/em> flashcards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now<\/strong> is there a difference?<\/p>\n<p><em>By George I think they\u2019ve got it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, in high enough percentages, \u201cconceptual\u201d flashcards do help students learn more.<\/p>\n<h2>Now We\u2019re Getting Somewhere<\/h2>\n<p>Based on these first two experiments, I think we have some useful answers to our initial questions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>First<\/strong>: at least so far, we don\u2019t have good evidence that students learn more when they make their own flashcards. Alas, this strategy seems inefficient, based on experiment #1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Second<\/strong>: conceptual flashcards do help students more than detail flashcards, as long as there are enough of them.<\/p>\n<p>I do think this second conclusion requires further nuance.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>first<\/strong> place, some disciplines really do require lots of detail knowledge. When I studied Czech, I had (literally) HUNDREDS of vocabulary flashcards. Other fields might require a similarly detail-heavy flashcard deck.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>second<\/strong> place, I do think K-12 students might need detail flashcards more than college students. After all, college students already know more details than younger students do \u2013 especially at the highly selective college where this study was performed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally<\/strong>, the distinction between \u201cdetail\u201d and \u201cconceptual\u201d might be overdrawn. Here\u2019s a technique I\u2019ve used in my own work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Step 1<\/em>: ask a student to draw two vocabulary flashcards, and to define those words.<\/p>\n<p>In my English class, the student might define the words \u201cprotagonist\u201d and \u201csympathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Step 2<\/em>: ask the student to <strong>make a connection<\/strong> between the two words.<\/p>\n<p>Now the student might say: \u201cWell, a <em>protagonist<\/em> is typically a <em>sympathetic<\/em> character \u2013 like Janie Mae Crawford. But not always: Macbeth certainly <em>is<\/em> the protagonist, and certainly <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> a sympathetic character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this technique, two \u201cdetail\u201d flashcards combine to require \u201cconceptual\u201d thinking \u2013 at least as defined by the researchers.<\/p>\n<h2>TL;DR<\/h2>\n<p>As long as we allow for nuance, and the possibility that future research will invite us to rethink these conclusions, this study suggests:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A: Students don\u2019t benefit from making their own flashcards \u2013 as long as we provide them with good ones, and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">B: Students DO benefit from flashcards that ask them to combine and organize information, not simply recall free-standing facts.<\/p>\n<p>These suggestions \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/flashcard-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">others that have good research support<\/a> \u2013 give us useful pointers to pass along to our students.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A Final Note:<\/p>\n<p>Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that I didn\u2019t answer my third question: \u201cdo flashcards benefit some students more than others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This study does point to an answer, but \u2026 I don\u2019t fully understand it.<\/p>\n<p>In brief, \u201chigh structure-building\u201d students don\u2019t benefit as much from conceptual flashcards, because they already do better than \u201clow structure-bulding\u201d students \u2013 who DO benefit from conceptual flashcards.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, I don\u2019t understand exactly what \u201chigh and low structure-building\u201d means here. Those words sound like a proxy for \u201chigh scoring\u201d and \u201clow scoring,\u201d but not exactly. Rather than pretend I know, I\u2019m simply fessing up that there\u2019s an extra variable here.<\/p>\n<p>If you figure it out, please let me know!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>* The authors of the study I&#8217;m describing acknowledge that this definition of &#8220;conceptual&#8221; is incomplete.
