{"id":6877302,"date":"2026-09-16T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/?p=6877302"},"modified":"2026-09-15T12:36:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T17:36:23","slug":"can-mindfulness-enhance-working-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/can-mindfulness-enhance-working-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Mindfulness Enhance Working Memory?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Longtime readers know that I&#8217;m obsessed with <strong>working memory<\/strong> &#8212; typically abbreviated as WM. This cognitive capacity allows people to hold information in mind, mentally move it around, and combine ideas and procedures together. Of course, <strong>learning<\/strong> requires students to execute all those mental operations. Simply put: <em>successful school learning requires successful working memory function<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the catch: humans just don&#8217;t have very much working memory. The bottleneck on this vital cognitive capacity creates strict limits on the learning that students &#8212; and all of us &#8212; can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, anyone in favor of learning would LOVE to find ways to increase working memory capacity. Despite the obvious appeal of this idea, we just haven&#8217;t found ways to accomplish that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance: <em>practice<\/em> usually increases our cognitive capacities. If I want to get better at speaking Spanish, solving calculus problems, or programming in Java, I can develop those abilities by chatting with my friends in Spanish, seeking out calculus problems to solve, and writing Java programs. Sadly, this strategy just doesn&#8217;t work with working memory. No matter how much WM practice we do, students don\u2019t see benefits of that training in their academic work. (Trust me: researchers have tried!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attuned to my interest in working memory, a friend recently pointed out an intriguing possibility&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Memory Meets Mindfulness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I typically define working memory with four verbs: a cognitive capacity that <strong>selects, holds, reorganizes,<\/strong> and <strong>combines<\/strong> ideas from multiple sources. Note: before WM does the &#8220;reorganizing and combining&#8221; necessary for learning, it must first &#8220;select and hold&#8221; the relevant facts, concepts, and procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we can&#8217;t get better at reorganizing and combining, <em>can we get better at selecting and holding<\/em>? Specifically, can <strong>mindful meditation<\/strong> help us hone those mental skills? After all, mindfulness typically invites meditators to <em>focus<\/em> on a particular stimulus &#8212; say, the breath &#8212; and to <em>maintain<\/em> that object of focus. &#8220;Focus and maintain&#8221; sounds a lot like &#8220;select and hold.&#8221; In theory, mindfulness training could very well increase WM capacity if it helps us get better at those first two verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend pointed me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2352250X18301398\">this review article<\/a> by Dr. Amishi Jha and colleagues. In it, Team Jha summarizes several studies showing that &#8212; sure enough &#8212; mindful meditation can preserve WM function in high-stress situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given both my focus on WM and the potential benefits of mindfulness, I&#8217;m an obvious candidate to be all in on Team Mindfulness. A mindfulness practice costs nothing, and \u2013 if it increases WM capacity \u2013 could very well help students learn almost anything. Perhaps \u2013 at last! \u2013 we\u2019ve found the solution to this vexing cognitive problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having looked over this article (and several others), I want to explain why I&#8217;m not yet convinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first place: a quick review of the research summarized by Jha raises important concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Much of this research focuses on military personnel. For many (many) reasons, I don&#8217;t think we should extrapolate from military training to PK-12 education. While the stress of school can be pressing, I&#8217;m confident it doesn&#8217;t reach the stress of active combat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The research in this review focuses less on <em>increasing<\/em> WM capacity than on <em>preserving<\/em> WM performance in highly stressful situations. The working memory bottleneck isn\u2019t widening; instead, mindfulness helps people use WM more effectively when highly stressed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, an initial review of these studies doesn\u2019t align with our hopes to increase our students\u2019 overall WM capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Further Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We also have some practical reasons to hesitate before requiring mindfulness in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance: some of the research that Jha discusses includes 30 minutes of mindfulness training per day. I wonder: what would school leaders take out of a school day to make room for 30 minutes of meditation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We might hope that a short period of training would launch students on an independent mindfulness practice. If students meditate at home, we wouldn\u2019t need significant time investment in school. Sadly, a study from the UK with 8,000+ participants found that \u2013 even after ten weeks of training \u2013 most students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/does-mindfulness-help-a-blockbuster-new-study\/\">just didn\u2019t continue meditating<\/a> on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-1024x684.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6888527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-1024x684.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-768x513.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AdobeStock_2163844122-2048x1367.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another concern: relatively little mindfulness research asks participants about negative experiences during or after their training. When we do ask, however, we find that a meaningful percentage of meditators report some level of distress. (If you\u2019re curious about this research pool, you can look <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35174010\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32820538\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re going to require mindfulness, we should \u2013 at a minimum \u2013 be well trained in identifying and supporting students who have adverse reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hopeful Directions?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For all these reasons, I\u2019m not yet sold on the idea of incorporating mindfulness in schools to enhance students\u2019 working memory. At the same time, I think we can ask a helpful related question: if mindfulness doesn\u2019t improve students\u2019 WM, could it instead strengthen their <strong>attention<\/strong>? If they maintain focus more effectively in class, it certainly seems plausible to hope that students will learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do in fact have some helpful studies pointing this direction (<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/hbm.25197\">here<\/a>). Alas, the bigger picture isn\u2019t as persuasive (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35820989\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this blog post has largely doubted the benefits of school-based mindfulness, I am in fact quite enthusiastic about an individual\u2019s decision to meditate. Many meditators report genuine benefits: feeling calmer, more focused, more clear-headed. If students want to meditate at school, we should be as helpful and encouraging as we reasonably can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, we should have different standards of evidence for <em>allowing <\/em>individuals to do something they <em>want<\/em> to do and <em>requiring <\/em>students to do something <em>whether they want to or not<\/em>.
