{"id":3656,"date":"2018-07-24T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-07-24T13:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/blog\/?p=3656"},"modified":"2018-07-23T19:25:57","modified_gmt":"2018-07-24T00:25:57","slug":"stress-age-stereotypes-harm-working-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/stress-age-stereotypes-harm-working-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Stress, Age, or Stereotypes Harm Your Working Memory?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We write a lot about <a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/working-memory-cheat-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working memory<\/a> here on the blog, and so I was intrigued to see a review article summarizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5973525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21 factors that might influence our WM performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AdobeStock_120033967_Credit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3659\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AdobeStock_120033967_Credit-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AdobeStock_120033967_Credit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AdobeStock_120033967_Credit-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AdobeStock_120033967_Credit-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several of this article&#8217;s conclusions jumped out at me. Some reconfirm important points. Others just might surprise you. Certainly they surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Some headlines&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Gender<\/h2>\n<p>Debates about <strong>gender and learning<\/strong>, it seems, extend into the world of working memory research.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;No general consensus in the field exists when it comes to the relationship between gender and WM performance. Several researchers report that men have an advantage on spatial WM tasks and that women have an advantage on verbal WM tasks, some researchers report only a spatial advantage for men, and others report no differences at all between genders.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Age<\/h2>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, working memory increases during <strong>adolescence<\/strong> &#8212; up until our early twenties.<\/p>\n<p>To my surprise, Blasiman and Was report that declines in WM begin in our twenties. This decline is &#8220;constant and continuous.&#8221; That is: our working memory gets smaller gradually over time; it doesn&#8217;t drop off suddenly later in life.<\/p>\n<h2>Stress, and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;m not surprised to see that <strong>stress<\/strong> interferes with WM. If I&#8217;m preoccupied with my bills, I won&#8217;t have as much WM left over to solve logic puzzles.<\/p>\n<p>I am a bit surprised to read that\u00a0<strong>dieting\u00a0<\/strong>hampers WM. The authors suggest that my efforts to resist that Snickers distract me from the cognitive task at hand.<\/p>\n<p>(Alas: even\u00a0<em>ineffective<\/em> dieting produces this result. That is: I might have a lower WM score even if I&#8217;m not losing weight.)<\/p>\n<p>By the way: we have lots of research connecting <strong>diet<\/strong> (not dieting) to WM. However, the review&#8217;s authors want further research to be persuaded. They currently consider evidence in this area to be &#8220;insufficient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Stereotypes<\/h2>\n<p>Many scholars have explored Claude Steele&#8217;s theory on <a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/overcoming-stereotypes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stereotype Threat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Several researchers show that ST <em>reduces<\/em> working memory. Others have demonstrated that strategies to counteract ST help <em>restore<\/em> WM.<\/p>\n<p>That is: once we identify the problem, we do have ways to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>This conclusion strikes me as particularly interesting, given the recent skepticism about Steele&#8217;s theory. It is, of course, harder to argue that Stereotype Threat doesn&#8217;t exist if it has an effect on our working memory capacity.<\/p>\n<h2>We&#8217;ve Only Just Begun<\/h2>\n<p>Are you curious about the effect of <strong>mindfulness<\/strong> on WM?<\/p>\n<p>Or, <strong>sleep<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>How about <strong>temperature<\/strong>, or <strong>bilingualism<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Check out Blasiman and Was&#8217;s research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5973525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We write a lot about working memory here on the blog, and so I was intrigued to see a review article summarizing 21 factors that might influence our WM performance.
