I&#8217;m a Tom Brady fan. But, good heavens, his Brain Training program looks like snake oil.<\/p>\n<p>The website (and, no, I&#8217;m not providing a link) uses all the right buzzwords: &#8220;brain plasticity,&#8221; &#8220;personalize,&#8221; &#8220;money-back guarantee!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some of the claims have a surface plausibility. You can, in fact, train your ability to track objects in space. Video games can do that for you, too.<\/p>\n<p>But the idea that all of this comes together to promote &#8220;brain speed&#8221; and &#8220;intelligence&#8221; seems laughable. (I don&#8217;t know what &#8220;brain speed&#8221; even means.)<\/p>\n<h2>The Recent History of &#8220;Brain Training&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Always remember: Lumosity was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2016\/01\/lumosity-pay-2-million-settle-ftc-deceptive-advertising-charges\" target=\"_blank\">fined<\/a> $2,000,000 for making false claims sounding like these. I suppose it&#8217;s possible that Brady&#8217;s Brain Team has cracked a code that no one else has. But, it seems\u00a0mightily unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m so vexed that I&#8217;m tempted to make a joke about Deflate-gate. For a Patriots fan, that&#8217;s as bad as it gets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Brady&#8217;s new &#8220;Brain Training&#8221; Website looks a lot like earlier attempts to over-hype thinly supported brain research.
