Again today, I&#8217;ve stumbled across another&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/teacherhead.com\/2012\/10\/21\/homework-what-does-the-hattie-research-actually-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a> summarizing John Hattie&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Visible Learning<\/em> on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Author Tom Sherrington makes two general points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>: the question &#8220;does homework help students learn&#8221; is too broad. We need to narrow it down. What <em>age<\/em> student are we discussing? What <em>kind of homework<\/em> are they doing? What <em>discipline<\/em> are they studying?<\/p>\n<p>This first point is often worth making. If someone asks you,\u00a0&#8220;Is technology good for learning?&#8221; remember that the question is too big to answer sensibly. Likewise: &#8220;does gender matter for learning?&#8221; Or &#8220;can we train brains?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Research can answer narrow question very well. The bigger the question, the less certain our answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>: the brief answer to the question is: homework\u00a0is helpful for older students, but not for younger ones.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as outlined above, that brief answer requires lots of elaboration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The question &#8220;does homework help students learn&#8221; is too big a question.
