{"id":2406,"date":"2017-10-10T08:00:52","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T08:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/blog\/?p=2406"},"modified":"2019-04-01T12:34:52","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T17:34:52","slug":"exercise-and-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/exercise-and-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise and Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AdobeStock_68395807_Credit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2408\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AdobeStock_68395807_Credit-674x1024.jpg\" alt=\"AdobeStock_68395807_Credit\" width=\"640\" height=\"972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AdobeStock_68395807_Credit-674x1024.jpg 674w, https:\/\/www.learningandthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AdobeStock_68395807_Credit-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Does even a short bout of exercise immediately after learning help form long-term memories?<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/cognitiveresearchjournal.springeropen.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s41235-017-0068-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>, published by <em>Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications<\/em>, suggests intriguing\u2014even surprising\u2014answers to this question.<\/p>\n<p>From a different perspective, this article also offers useful insights into the way that psychologists think and work<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it helps answer a second question: what should researchers do when their data are inconsistent?<\/p>\n<h2>The Study<\/h2>\n<p>Steven Most and colleagues wondered if even 5 minutes of exercise immediately after learning would increase the exerciser\u2019s memory of that information.<\/p>\n<p>To test this question, Most had students study pairs of names and faces, and then do five minutes of exercise. (They stepped on and off a low platform.) He then tested their memory of those name\/face pairs the following day, and compared their performance to two control groups.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to one control group which <u>did not exercise<\/u>, these steppers remembered more words.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, compared to another control group which did exercise<u> before<\/u> they learned the name\/face pairs, these steppers remembered more words.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the surprise. On average, the exercising <em>men<\/em> in the study remembered slightly <em>fewer<\/em> pairs than the non-exercising men. But the exercising <em>women<\/em> remembered <strong>more than twice<\/strong> <strong>as many pairs<\/strong> as their non-exercising female peers.<\/p>\n<p>This article opened with a question: does a short bout of exercise immediately after learning help form long-term memories?<\/p>\n<p>The answer: it certainly seems to, but <em>only for women<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Psychologists at Work<\/h2>\n<p>Although a lot of work goes into this kind of study, psychologists are rarely satisfied to examine a question just once. When they get these results\u2014especially such interesting results\u2014they\u2019re inclined to repeat their study with slight variations.<\/p>\n<p>They are, in effect, trying to prove themselves wrong. Or, at least, trying to discover the limits outside of which their findings aren\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p>So, Most et. al. repeated their study. This time, instead of testing the students the <em>following<\/em> day, they tested them <em>later the same day<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The results? They arrived at the same major findings. Although the women\u2019s increase wasn\u2019t so dramatic post exercise (they remembered <em>almost<\/em> twice as many name\/face pairs, not <em>more than<\/em> twice as many name\/face pairs), post-study exercisers still remembered more pairs than pre-study exercisers, and than non-exercisers.<\/p>\n<h2>Brace Yourself<\/h2>\n<p>Up to this point, Most\u2019s team had gotten the same dramatic answer twice. What does a good psychologist do?<\/p>\n<p>Most repeated the study <em>again<\/em>\u2014this time using <strong>name\/shape<\/strong> pairs instead of <strong>name\/face<\/strong> pairs.<\/p>\n<p>The results? Nada.<\/p>\n<p>This time, none of the groups should significant differences at all. No differences between the pre- and post-study exercisers. No differences between the exercisers and non-exercisers. No meaningful gender differences. Bupkis.<\/p>\n<p>So, you know what happens next: they performed their research paradigm a 4<sup>th<\/sup> time. This version was practically identical to the first; they simply made a slight change to the non-exercise task. (Crucially, Most\u2019s team went back to name\/face pairs.)<\/p>\n<p>The results?<\/p>\n<h2>Drum roll please\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Basically, a nothingburger.<\/p>\n<p>As was true in study #3 &#8212; but contrary to studies #1 and #2 &#8212; study #4 showed no statistically significant differences. As the authors write<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExamining the data only from the women, those in the exercise group exhibited somewhat better memory than those in the non-exercise group, but this [difference] fell short of significance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the world of psychology, if a result falls short of statistical significance, you can\u2019t make strong claims about your findings.<\/p>\n<h2>Psychologists at Work, Part II<\/h2>\n<p>Imagine that you\u2019re a professional psychologist. You\u2019ve spent months\u2014probably years\u2014running these studies. Some of your results\u2014studies #1 and #2\u2014are strong and compelling. Others\u2014#3 and #4\u2014don\u2019t get you very far.<\/p>\n<p>What do you do with this muddle?<\/p>\n<p>As we asked at the top of this article: what should researchers do when their data are inconsistent?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is: <em>You publish it<\/em>. You publish it <strong>all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You say: look, we ran our studies and came up with a confusing and interesting collection of results. Here you go, world, see what you make of them.<\/p>\n<p>You do not hide it. You do not, for example, publish studies #1 and #2 and pretend that #3 and #4 didn\u2019t happen. You publish it all.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Most and colleagues went further. They created a handy graph (on page 11) making this inconsistency extremely clear. It\u2019s easy to see that, for men, the short bout of exercise didn\u2019t make much of a difference in any of the studies. My undergraduate degree is in Medieval History and Literature; I have an MA (and half of a PhD) in English. I am, in other words, historically a Humanities kind of guy.<\/p>\n<p>But I have to say, this article exemplifies some of the many reasons that I have grown to admire a scientist\u2019s approach to teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<p>Most and his colleagues, Briana Kennedy and Edgar Petras, not only tried to prove themselves wrong, they went out of their way to show the results when they partially succeeded in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there\u2019s a lot of talk about a \u201creplication crisis\u201d in psychology. Yes, nobody knows what a p-value really means, and why .05 is the chosen threshold.<\/p>\n<p>But at the end of the day, researchers like Most, Kennedy, and Petras are doing hard, fascinating, and helpful work\u2014and they\u2019re being remarkably straightforward with others about the complexity of their findings.<\/p>\n<p>We should all admire this article.
