Many educators are familiar with Psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” and his theory that certain needs must be met before people are motivated to move up to become self-actualized – or the best you can become. Unfortunately, many students’ basic needs are not being met so that can move up Maslow’s scale from safety, to love, belonging and social acceptance, to self-esteem, confidence and compassion, to cognitive needs such as curiosity, purpose, and meaning. However, brain and psychological research is finding that meeting these needs is essential for improving academic achievement, school climate, wellbeing, and self-actualization. This conference will explore the science of love, belonging, and social connections, self-esteem and self-compassion, mindfulness, and meaning; how they are connected to academic achievement and wellbeing; and ways you can help your students, and yourselves, feel secure, accepted, connected, confident, and successful.
