MORNING PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
THURSDAY, MAY 6 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Cost: $185 per person
(By advance registration only. Select one of six. Add $25 fee if you are not attending the conference.)

1. Brain-Based Teaching Strategies to Engage Students’ Minds and Memory

This presentation will cover such topics as using advances in neuroscience research to ignite students' engagement, maximizing and maintaining attention and focus, determining an appropriate level of challenge for all students, and strategies to increase memory retrieval.
Judy Willis, MD, EdM, Board-Certified Neurologist, middle school teacher; author, Inspiring Middle School Minds (2009), How Your Child Learns Best (2008), Teaching the Brain to Read (2008), Brain-Friendly Strategies for the Inclusion Classroom (2007) and Research-Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning (2006)

2. The Neuropsychology of Motivation: What Brain Sciences Tells Us About Motivating Children and Adolescents

The workshop will focus on the brain’s “motivational system” and will discuss various neurological and other physiological factors that contribute to individual differences in motivation. It will also explore motivational challenges associated with a number of childhood disorders, and the development of self-motivation as part of the more general process of acquiring the self-understanding and self-regulatory skills that young people need in order to clarify their goals and take the necessary steps to pursue them.
William R. Stixrud, PhD, Clinical Neuropsychologist; Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, George Washington University Medical Center; Director, William Stixrud and Associates

3. Complementary and Alternative Interventions for ADHD for Parents and Teachers

This workshop will explore the latest in alternative and complementary treatments to improve ADHD symptoms in children and adults, such as neurofeedback, nutrition, exercise, and working-memory training.
Barbara D. Ingersoll, PhD, Clinical Psychologist; CHADD Hall of Fame recipient; President, Health, Wellness and Fitness; co-author of Lonely, Sad & Angry (2001); author of Daredevils and Daydreamers: New Perspectives on Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (1998)

4. Brain Anatomy 101-- An Introduction to the Brain and Neurosciences

Equip yourself with a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the brain and learning and discuss the relationship between education, emotions, and neuroscience, promising directions for applying neuroscience in the classroom, and the role of educators in shaping the future of cognitive neuroscience.
Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, EdD, Assistant Professor, Rossier School of Education; Research Assistant Professor, Brain and Creativity Institute, University of Southern California

5. Integrating RTI with Cognitive Neuropsychology: A Scientific Approach to Reading

This workshop will examine reading from a brain-behavioral perspective, and classify reading disorders into four distinct subtypes. There will be a discussion linking each reading subtype with scores of evidence-based interventions. The use of neuropsychological assessment within a 4-tiered response to intervention (RTI) system will be discussed as the primary means to pinpoint specific reading disorders in children.
Steven G. Feifer, EdD, NCSP, Neuropsychologist; School Psychologist; co-author of The Neuropsychology of Mathematics: Diagnosis and Intervention (2005), The Neuropsychology of Written Language Disorders (2001) and The Neuropsychology of Reading Disorders: Diagnosis & Intervention (2000)

6. Managing “The Flow” of Attention to Increase Learning

Are your students in an attentive state to learn? If not, your first job is to get them in such a state because, if you don’t, no amount of great teaching will cause learning to take place! State management—especially managing the “flow” of attention—is thus a crucial aspect of quality teaching; unfortunately, it is an area in which most teachers have little or no training. In this informative workshop, find out how you can use concepts like “crest of the wave” and “press and release” and tools like music, movement, effective directions, and state changes to get students’ attention when you want it, to help students focus on academic tasks when they need to, and to maximize the amount of time they spend in positive learning states—all in a fun, interactive learning environment.
Willy Wood, MA, President, Open Mind Technologies; former high school and university teacher; national speaker on brain-based teaching

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY “ATTENTION & ENGAGEMENT” SUMMIT
WEDNESDAY, MAY 5

“Attention and Engagement in Learning” Second Annual Summit
Sponsored by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Education Neuro-Education Initiative
Summit will take place at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore, MD

In conjunction with the Learning & the Brain Conference, The Johns Hopkins University School of Education will host a summit and roundtable discussion on Attention and Engagement in Learning at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD. The summit will explore current findings on the topic of attention and student engagement and to frame a research agenda to inform educational practice at school, home and the community. As a Learning & the Brain Conference attendee, you receive a special invitation to attend this event as well as the conference. The summit in Baltimore, Maryland, is easily accessible from the Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. by Amtrak train from Union Station (located a couple blocks from the Hyatt Hotel).
For more information or to register for this pre-conference event, visit www.education.jhu.edu/nei.
